Hope's garland : on a letter addressed to Francis Annesley Esqr. M.P. by Thomas Hope Esqr., 1804?.

Manuscript copy, in pen and brown ink, of Henry Tresham's ballad, "Hope's garland: on a letter addressed to Francis Annesley Esqr. M.P. by Thomas Hope Esqr." The title page and 6 pages of verse are copied in a single, unidentified hand. Wording of the verse appears to be identical to that of the printed version circulated by Tresham (see note in British Architectural Library. Early printed books, no. 1548). The present manuscript copy is bound with the pamphlet it attacks: Observations on the plans and elevations designed by James Wyatt, architect, for Downing College, Cambridge: in a letter to Francis Annesley, by Thomas Hope (London: D.N. Shury, 1804).

In 1804, Thomas Hope authored Observations on the plans and elevations designed by James Wyatt, architect, for Downing College, Cambridge, in which Hope was highly critical of the Roman Doric designs submitted by Wyatt (then president of the Royal Academy). In the same pamphlet, Hope declared his preference for the neo-Greek designs (with less unnecessary ornament) submitted by William Wilkins. Wilkins' designs were ultimately the winning submission.
